MACGRUAR, Macgbubr, Macgrouther, Macgrowther, Macgruder, Macgrudder, Macgruthar, Macgruther, Macgrouder, Macgrewer, Macrither: Gaelic Macgrudaire, 'brewer's son.' Now shortened to Grewar and Grewer. The name is found principally in the south of Perthshire, about Glenaitney, and was common in Dunblane and Doune in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The Macgruers of the North as a sept are merged mostly in the Frasers and adjoining clans. The earliest recorded of the name is Gilawnane McCrouder, witness in a charter to John de Cumre, 1447 (RMS., II, 640), and Gillert McGrevar (ev = eu), tenant of Dowart, Stragartna, 1499 (ER., XI, p. 417). Donald McGruer witnessed a sasine in favor of Thomas Stewart of Grantully, 1494 (Grandtully, I, p. 38), Johannes moir Mcgrwdder was pa rishioner of Duthil, 1537 (Grant, III, p. 268), Duncan M'Rudder, witness in Perth, 1547 (Rollok, 16), Thomas McGrowder was witness in Lovat, 1550 (REM., p. 410), and Alexander M'Gruder held the parsonage of Lochals (Loch Alsh) and Lochcarron, then apparently united, before 1582 (OPS., II, p. 395,396; RPC., III). John Makgruder, son of James Makgruder, was a retainer of Lord Drummond, 1580-81 (Geneal. House of Drummond p. 126; RPC., III), and Robert Makrudder was reidare at Kintallaitie, 1574 (RMR.). John McGrader, Phledgeour (arrow-maker) in Blairnrowar near Comrie, fined in 1613 for reset of Clan Gregor, is mentioned in the following year as John Grudgear, Phledgeour, in Barnrowar (RPC., XIV p. 639,660). Alexander McGruther was younger of Meigar in 1704 (Muthill). The name was early Englished, e.g. Gillecrist Brouster, a victim of the first hership of Petty, 1502 (Rose, p. 176).
