MACIGHEILL: A family of this name are said to have been barons of Banichebean, Craignish, before the Campbells. The Whytes of Argyll are perhaps descended from them. The name is still remembered in Argyllshire and in Islay. Dowgall McGeyll was tenant in Dunyveg and Keanchyllan, and Malcolme McGeyll was tenant in Kilnachtane, Islay, 1686 (Book of Islay, p. 492,496). John mc yeall is recorded in Kilmore, 1092 (Commons, p. 28). Islay was one of the havens of refuge to which the outlawed Macgregors fled, and the name has been explained as Clann a' gbeiii, "clan of the yielding" It may be a variant of Mac a' ghoill, "son of the Lowlander." Many Lowlanders from Ayrshire settled in Kintyre in the seventeenth century from 1640 onwards. Calum Mclgheill in Nether Lorn, 1692 (Commons, p. 33), Katharine M'lyeil appears in Kildievan, 1772 (Campbell, I, p. 183), Mary M'lgheill in Ardyurd in Mull, 1743 (Isles), John M'Ighaill in Torosay was a prisoner of the '45 (Prisoners, III, p. 98), and Alexander M'lgheill is in Nether Fincham, 1751 (Argyll).
