MACILRIACH, MaCilreach, Macilraith, Macilaraith, Macilarith, Macilwraith, Macgillreick, Macilleriach, Macellrick (Ayrshire), Macilurick (Ayrshire), Macilwrick (Galloway): In Gaelic Mac 'Ille riabhaich, 'son of (the) brindled lad.' This is the commonest patronymic or surname compounded with gille-. It is common in Galloway and throughout the Highlands, and was a common personal name in Rreadalbane 200 and more years ago. A money allowance was granted for Andrew, son of John Make Gille Reue, a Scots hostage who died in Carlisle prison in 1300 (Hist. Docs., II, p. 426; Bain, II, 1179). Thomas M'Gilrewy was a Douglas tenant in the barony of Buittle, 1376 (RHM., I, p. Ix), and David McKilwirk (i.e. Mcilwrick) was bailie of Dumfries, 1476 (ER., VIII, p. 393). Donald Makgillereoch or Mak-gillereacht appears as witness in 1485 and 1497 (Cawdor, p. 69, 87), and Robert Makgillereach was concerned in the 'spulyie of Kilravock,' 1497 (Rose, p. 166). Duncan McGiilereach in Fandownyach had a precept of remission for offences committed by him, 1503 (RSS., I, 957), and the obit of Johannes M'Gillerawyth in Glenloquhacy is recorded in 1506 (Chr. Fort.). Michae Dow Mcalgerache, an aged Highlander, was convicted of common theft and 'pikry' (petty theft) in Kirkcudbright in 1508 and banished the town (Trials, I, p. 53). Nele M'llwraith, a follower of the earl of Cassilis, was respited for murder, 1526 (RSS., I, 3386). Patrick M'Gillewriche or Gillevrich was a tenant under the marquis of Huntlie in the Cabrach, 1607 (SCM., IV, p. 282), Neil Mclllereoche or McKillereoch in Carnakalliche and John Dow Mclllereoche in Ballezartna were put to the horn, 1629 (RPC., 2. ser. II, p. 341; III, p. 46). John M'llwraithe was a notary in Mayboill, 1641 (Retours, Ayr, 354), Matthew Micklewrath and Donald or Daniel Miklewrock in the parish of Colmonel, were shot for being Covenanters in 1685 (Hanna, II, p. 256,257, 272), and John Mc ilrivich in Achadlarie was a rebel in the same year (Commons, p. 12). Donald and Patrick M'Chille-Reoch were among the duke of Atholl's fencible men in Glenlyon, 1708 (HMon., III, p. 215), Adam Maklewreach was married in Edinburgh, 1614 (Edinb. Marr.), and Andrew M'Alwraith was a soldier of the city guard, 1734 (Guildry, p. 149). Macilvraith is an old name in the parish of Ballantrae (Paterson, II, p. 87), and it is and was a common surname in Kintyre and Islay, appearing on old tombstones there as Macilriach, now shortened to Revie, which see. The name also exists in Uist and Skye, but is there mostly swallowed up in English by Macdonald. Ruchanan records M'llrevies as a sept under Clanranald. In Kilmuir, Skye, there is a place called Baile Mhic Illeriabhaich, 'township of the Macgilleriabhachs.' "According to Dr. M'Laren M'llwraith of Sheffield, the M'llwraiths belonged to these lands, and a bond of manrent between them and the lord of the Isles (or Macdonald of the Isles) was signed at Castle Camus (Knock), Sleat, Skye, on August 13, 1632. Their patronymic was 'Clann Ileirich,' and when asked to write, they always wrote 'MacDonald.' A usual written form of the name is M'Gillereoch, but Mackilwraith is found in Carrick in 1538, Makilreve in Dumfries, 1539, and M'lluraick in Galloway, 1588, M'lllereoch (in Auchclochinluy, 1594), Mackilwraith (Edinburgh, 1596), M'Ilerith (Luss, 1610), M'Cillirick (Abertarff, 1634), M'Gillereith (Benbecula, 1622), M'Illreave (Kirktoun, Kirkmichael, 1672), M'llreave (in Cnockalloway, 1672), M'Gillerewyche 1502, Mcllwrith and Mclllwrick 1687, McKilwrath (1681), M'Gillereach and M'llwrathe (1682), M'llroych (Kilmore, Argyll, 1687), and in Wigtownshire and Minnigaff in 1684 as Mclllvriie, McElvrick, Mclllrie, Meiklevrick, and McKilwrath. Sir Walter gave the name Habbakuk Mucklewrath to fanatical leader of the Covenanters in his Old Mortality. One of the Gaelic names of the Devil, it may be mentioned, is An Riabhach Mor, the great brindled or singed one!
