In OG. tolsech had the meaning 'chief, leader, or front man,' The word occurs in a Welsh ogham inscription as a proper name-Tovisaci, from early Gaelic to-uess-acos. The modern Welsh is tywysog, 'prince.' The Perthshire Mackintoshes have no connection with those of Inverness beyond the name. Both Mackintoshes are descended from different toschachs-those of Glentilt, who afterwards settled at Dalmunzie in Glenshee, are descended from Ewen (Eugenius or Hugh), son of 'Good John of Islay,' to whom a charter of the thanage was granted by Robert the Steward and lord of Atholl, afterwards Robert 11, about 1345-47 (Skene, CS,, III, p. 272). In 1382 the king issued a mandate to the lord of Badenoch to call Farchard Mctoschy to his presence and to exact from him security that Adam, bishop of Aberdeen and his men on the bishop's lands of Brass (Birse) shall be free from persecution and trouble by Mctoschy and his adherents (APS., XII, p. 18; REA., I, p. 136). A similar mandate was issued to John, earl of Carrick and Steward of Scotland to enforce the same (loc. cit.). Alexander Keyr Makyntosh had a carta feodifirmae from the bishop of Moray with consent of the chapter 'terrarum ecclesiasticarum de Rothymurchus' (REM., p. 415). Eight years later in his bond of manrent to William, earl of Errol, he is described as Alexander Maclrintoche, thane of Rathamurchus (SCM., II, p. 252). Laichlan Mackyntoich witnessed a charter by Alexander, earl of Huntlie to Alexander Stewart of Granetuly, 1468 (Grandtully, I, p. 21). Duncan Mcyntosh was captain of Clancattan, 1492 (REM., p. 238-239). Jhone Machyntoys was tenant of Enyrvak in Atholl, 1500 (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 252). The 'obitus Dougalli M'Gynthossuc et Faichardi eius filii cum suis complicibus, vbi interfecti fuerunt apud castrum de innemys per Lachlanum M'Inthosse anno &c. vcxxj' (Chron. Fort., p. 117), and the 'obit Lawchlan M'Gynthossych, capitani de Clanchatten,' MVcxxiiij (ibid., p. 118). In 1528 James v issued a mandate to the earl of Moray and the sheriffs of the bordering counties to leave 'na creater levand of that claim Macintosh except priests, wemen, and bamis,' but the women and children were to be driven to the coast for transportation to the shores of the opposite continent (SCM., II, p. 84). inglis M'Cuintosych had a charter of the lands of Loppen with mill in the barony of Duris, 1557 (RMS., IV, 1234). Charles Macintosh (1766-1843) was inventor of the waterproofing of cloth by treating with a solution of rubber, whence the garment, 'a macintosh.' Some old spellings of the name show the influence of the old genitive in -gh.
