MacIntyre Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Gaelic Mac an t-saoir, 'son of the carpenter' or 'wright.' Glenoe, near Bunawe, Nether Lorn, was the country of this sept. General Stewart (Sketches, II, p. 82n) states, without giving his authority, that they possessed the farm of Glenoe from 1380 to 1810, a statement constantly repeated without any evidence being offered in its support. By some careless writers, again, Glenoe has been changed to the more familiar Glencoe. Traditionally the Macintyres are given as a sept of Macdonald, but historically they appear always to have been subordinate to the chiefs of Upper Lorn, and they are included among the 'native men" of the Stewarts of Appin. Five Macintyres in Appin's regiment in the '45 were killed and five wounded (Coll., p. 199). They ere also said to have been hereditary foresters to the Stewarts of Lorn and later to the Campbells of Lorn. The name appears in the Memorials of the Montgomeries (II, p. 49) under date 1490, when Gillechrist M'Yndr witnessed a letter of reversion by the rector of the church of St. Mary at Rothesay, and Christinus M'Yntir witnessed a sasine in favor of the same priest. The ferry of Conane was leased to Feiquhard McYnter in 1504 (ER,, XII, p. 664), and Gildow Maldntare had a Crown grant of a third of Dunallirde, Bute, 1506 (RMS., II, 2987). Duncan M'Kintier took part in the second "hership of Petty," 1513 (Rose, p. 190). Duncan M'Olcallum and others of the Clan Teir gave their bond of manrent to Campbell of Glemurquhay, 1556, and several individuals named Makintyr bound themselves to deliver Mwlcallum Makintyr to Duncan Campbell of Glenerchy in 1590 (BBT., p. 200-201,246). Johnne Mcinteir in Grotik to answer to a charge of violence and robbery, 1592 (RPC., V, p. 28), and another Johnne M'lntheir was prosecuted in 1623 "for latting of umquhile Finlay M'Keissik's bairnis the for hunger and haifing thair geir to sustene tham thairwith" (BBT., p. 379). Duncan Mc anteir was an "engager" on the royalist side in the parish of Urray, 1649 (IDR., p. 368). Hugh Macdonald's story of the origin of the name is too silly for belief. Maldntere 1506, Mclntyir, Mclntyr 1686, M'Kintyre 1690, McYntyre 1540. Several of the name have changed to Wright, which see.

The Surnames of Scotland (1946) by George Fraser Black (1866-1948)

(Celtic) Son of the Carpenter [Gaelic and Irish Mac-an-t-shaoir] The Gaelic and Irish word for Carpenter (nom. case) is saor or saer; s does not appear in Macintyre because, according to Gaelic phonetics, when a noun beginning with s is preceded by the article the s is eclipsed when the noun is nominative fem., genitive masc., or (generally) dative masc, and fem. Each eclipsable consonant has its own eclipsing letter; that of s is t.

Cp. Mactaggart = The Priest’s Son.

‘Ciaran Mac-ak-tsair', a.d. 990.

‘The importance attached by the Act, 5 Ed. IV to the bearing of an English surname, soon induced many of the less distinguished Irish families, of the English Pale, and its vicinity, to translate or disguise their Irish names, so as to make them appear English; thus Mac-an-T-saor was altered to Carpenter.'
