From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Gaelic Mac Ealair, 'son of Ealair,' the Gaelic form of Latin Hilarius, the name of the bishop of Poitiers, commemorated in the Felire of Oengus at 13 January. Hilarius was one of the jury in the trial in 1233 concerning the lands of Monachkeneran (RMP., p. 167). Patrick McKellar was a charter witness at Carnasserie in 1436 (Poltalloch Writs, p. 71). A precept of sasine was addressed in 1470 by the earl of Argyll to Cristin M'Callar of Ardare (OPS., II, p. 47), and in 1476 James III granted to Gilchrist Makalere the lands of Ardare and Cragmurgile in the barony of Glastray (RMS.). Archibald Makelar of Argile, 'Scottyshman,' had a safe conduct to travel in England, 1488 (Bain, IV, 1550), and Michael M'Kalar witnessed seizin of Cragniche to Archibald, earl of Argyll, 1493 (OPS., II, p. 97). Gilbert McKellar of Ardare and Patrick McKellar are in record, 1496, at Kilmun (Poltalloch Writs, p. 183). Duncan McCallar or Makcaller was a charter witness at Dumbarton, 1500 (HP., IV, p. 22, 23). Martin M'Caller attested a Lamont instrument of sasine, 1525 (Lamont Inv., p. 36), and Patrick M'Keller witnessed a Glenurquhay bond of manrent in 1528 (BBT., p. 179). Duncan Makkellar of Ardare was depute of Colin, earl of Argyll in 1518 and in 1538 Gilleane M'Callar was one of the bailies of Earl Archibald (OPS., II, p. 47). Thomas M'Callar was procurator in Perth, 1550 (Rollok, 113), Duncan M'llpatrik VcKellart was a charter witness in 1553 (OPS., II, p. 47), and Gilmertine M'Eller or MacEllere was concerned in the murder of the laird of Calder, 1594 (HP., I, p. 181 ). Ellar McKellar in Arinaughton, a witness in 1688 (RPC., 3. ser. XIII, p. 303). Angus McKellor was ordered to be transported to New England, 1685 (ibid., XI, p. 94). Goods were plundered from Ellar McEllar and Duncan McEllar in Stukskardan, Glenshire, 1679 by Macdonalds and Camerons (Argyll MSS., p. 629).
