This name is the Gaelic form of Finlayson, both meaning 'son of Finlay,' which see. In Gaelic orthography the name is MacFhionnhigh. The name is distinctively a Scottish one, but is found also in the north of Ireland (Antrim) among the descendants of the settlers of the Scots Plantation of Ulster. Unlike most other Scottish surnames beginning with Mac this name is not a common one, occurring but sparingly in the public records of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries as M'Finlay (1663), Mclndlay (1667), Macinle (1605), M'Kandlay and M'Keandlay (1627), M'Kinla and Makldnla (1528), McUinlay and McUnlay (1718), McEnlea 1706. The name occurs most commonly in record in Glenlyon and in Ralquhidder. Gillaspyk M'Kynlay witnessed an instrument of sasine of Cragniche (Craignish) to Archibald, earl of Argyll in 1493 (OPS., II, p. 97). Sir John Finlosoun alias McAlan McKewilla (the attempt of a non-Gaelic scribe to write MacFhionnlaigh) was vicar of Kilmorich in 1511 (RMS., II). John MYnla attested a bond of manrent in Glenurquhay in 1561 (RRT., p. 204), Malcolm M'Inley in Balliwilling was enounced as a rebel in 1675 (HP., I), and Donald M'Kindlay appears in Innerchocheill in 1696 (Dunkeld), and six others of the name ere in the same record. John M'Keandla appears in Daill in 1661 (Caithness). William McKinley, twenty-fifth president of the United States, was descended from David McKinley, an Ulster Scot, born about 1730, and his wife Rachel Stewart. The Mackintoshes of Cams (on R. Shee), are also known as "alias Macinlies." Mclnlie here is = Mac Fhionnlaidh, though it occurs in RPC., XI, as McLeith, McCleich, McKinleiche, Mcllleich (Mackintosh, Mackintosh families in Glenshee and Gienislo, p. 75-76).
