The Surnames of Scotland (1946) by George Fraser Black (1866-1948)

This name is numerous in Ulster to-day; it is mainly found in Counties Antrim and Tyrone. It is far more numerous now than it was a century ago-in 1866 there were 9 MacKinney births registered and in 1890 there were 42. The reason for this most unusual increase is that there has been a continuous tendency for the Scottish Mackenzie to become MacKinney in Ireland and it has also been used as a synonym of MacKenna. MacKinney is also the name of a sept of the Clan Mackinnon.

Supplement to Irish Families (1964) by Edward MacLysaght

Mac Coinnigh This name, which is that of a sept of the Scottish clan MacKinnon, has greatly increased in numbers owing to its absorption of several families of MacKenzie and of MacKenna. It is almost entirely associated with Cos. Antrim and Tyrone. SIF 99
