MacLaren Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

In Gaelic Mac Labhruinn, 'son of Laurence' (G. Labhruinn, Middle Gaelic. (1467) Labbran). The name has nothing to do with the old personal name Loam (from: Lovernos, 'fox' ). The first recorded of the name appears to be Lorin Mak Gilserf, a witness in 1258, who appears again in 1266 as Lome Mach gilherve (Inchoffray), p. 77, 85). Loro de Ardebethey of Perthshire rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 200). Johannes M'Lern, capellanus, witnessed a charter of the lands of Balmaclelane in 1466 (RMS., II, 907). Donald Maklaurene in Dalbeyich and Finlay Makneill Vc Laurent were witnesses in 1586, Laurent M'Laurent, son to Laurent M'Laurent in Craigruy in Buchquhedir, was witness to a bond of 1587, and several individuals named M'Laurent are named in a bond to Sir Duncan Campbell of Glenurquhay in 1606 (BBT., p. 237,241, 257) Laran McLaran was charged with robbers and violence in the lands of Drumquhassil, etc., in 1592 (RPC., V, p. 28), and Robert McClawrane in Balquhidder and his son were charged with wearing hagbuts and killing deer in the royal forest of Glenfinlas, 1612 (RPC., IX, p. 457). A decreet against Archibald M'kleren in Achagyll for rent and teinds, 1672 (HP., II, p. 218). Daniel M'Cleron is in record in Sound of Yell, 1742 (Mill, Diary), and thirteen Maclarens in Stewart of Appin's regiment in the '45 were killed and fourteen wounded (Coll., p. 199). An epitaph on the south side of the old chapel of Balquhidder sets forth at great length the gross heresy of a nameless individual who first suppressed the letter "u" in the time-honored name: "This ancient patronymic evidently derived from the Dahiadic chief Laurin of Laurin, in Argyle, whose descendants and kindred at an early period of our Scottish history were numerous and powerful in the districts of Menteith, Lennox Strathern, and Balquhidder, has of late (by Pcoto-Saxon transcribers, ignorant alike of Gaelic orthography and its proper pronunciation ) been corrupted to MacLaren and MacLarin, and thus by the mere omission of the single vowel II, equivalent to BH in the Gaelic found in the original spelling of the proper name the identity of this modern name with the ancient and euphonick name of Maclaurin is almost entirely destroyed to the mere Gael. This modern corruption of an old clan name is entirely unknown, where the proper name is well-known and never pronounced other-in the Gaelic than 'MacLabhrain,' and in the English 'MacLaurin'" (Stirling antiquary, I, p. 204). Dr. Richard Cockburn Maclaurin (1870—1920), president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was born in Lindean, Roxburghshire. MacClaran 1698, M'Clarene and M'Clearen 1663, M'Claring, M'Laring, and M'Leran 1745, Macklerain 1574, M'Lairen 1683, McLaurine 1746, McLawran 1715, McLawrine 1724, Mc leron 1753 M'Larin 1816.
