From Gaelic Mac Gille Thamhais, 'son of the gillie of Tammas,' the Scots form of Thomas. Gilles Makgilhoise had custody of the royal park and garden of Stirling in 1479 (ER., VIII, p. 563), and Joh. Makgilhewous, probably a relative, was charter witness in same burgh in 1465 (RMS., II, 844; Sc. Ant., VI p. 163). Patrick Makgilhois witnessed a notarial instrument in Kippen, 1510 (Cambus., 128). John McGilhosche was a victim of oppression in Wigtown, 1513 (Trials, I, p. 96). Duncan Mcllhois in Glenlyoun was fined for reset of Clan Gregor, 1613 (RPC., XIV, p. 633). Thomas Macklehois was tailor in Edinburgh, 1612, Thomas Maclehose, cordiner there, 1638, and Catharine Mackilhoise there, 1630 (Edinb. Man.). John Mcllhoise in Kilmainane was charged with refusing the authorized instruction of his craft of tanner, 1622 (RPC., XII, p. 670). Duncan Mcllhaos was servant to Sir John MacDugall of Dunnoldich (Dunollie), 1623, and sheep were stolen from Thomas Mcllhoise in Gergunnock in same year (ibid., XIII, p. 271,325). John M'Gilchois appears in parish of Logierait and John M'Gillhois in Rrae of Tullimet, 1658 (Dunblane), and William M'lllhos was an elder in Killearn in same year (Strathendrick, p. 55). Seven of the name M'llhose are recorded in Dunblane vicinity in eighteenth century (Dunblane). By some changed to Hosier. Now called by some MuCklehose (Editor, Trials, I, p. 96). M'llhoise 1588, M'Llchois (Perthshire) 1611, M'Ilhose or Micklehose (Kippen) 1683, M'Ilhouse 1698, Mcillhose and McKillhose 1681.
