From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Gaelic Mac Lulaich, 'son of Lulach, ' q. v. The name is sometimes wrongly Englished Macculloch, a name of quite different origin. The Argyllshire Maccullochs around Lochaweside are really Maclullichs, and are referred to in Gaelic as 'cioinn Lullaich o thulaich Mhaodain' (Records, p. 320). A son of Ywar Mac Lulli was one or the hostages to be given by John of Isla, 1350 (Cian Donald, I, p. 113). ffinlay McLuiloig is in Nether Lorn, and Dun: mc Clullich in Innishail, 1692 (Commons, p. 30, 33). Duncan Maclullich matriculated at the University of Glasgow, 1824. The surname is not common. Hugh Macdonald tells us that Reginald, son of Somerled, was married to MacRandel's daughter or as some say, to a sister of Thomas Randel, earl of Moray, and by her had Angus, of whom are descended the MacLulichs 'who are now called in the low country Pittullichs' (HP., I, p. 13). This is erroneous the surname Pattullo (and its variants) is of local or territorial origin. See under Pattllo.
