Cristinus McNawyche witnessed a charter by John de Meneteecne, lord of Arran and Knapdale, to the monastery of Kilwinning, 1357 (RMS., I, 182; C AGAA., I, p. 169). Fergus M'Nauch of Culconnody and John M'Nauch of Craigow were on assize, 1448. A composition was made with Gilbert M'Nauth in Kirkcudbright, 1473 (ALHT., I, p. 7). Martyne M'Nacht witnessed letters of reversion, 1519 (Pollok, I, p. 241). Gillie Genach MacNicht in the Le vis was put to the horn in 1606. John McKnawcht, burgess of Edinburgh, 1612, may be John M'Nacht, merchant burgess there, retoured in lands of Larglach, parish of Kirkpatrick-Durham, 1617, Roger M'Naught was retoured heir in ten mark lands of Killquhannatie, 1634, and Nicola M'Naught retoured in same lands, 1646 (Retours, Kirkcudbright, 132,209, 243). Andrew M'Nauche in Blaccader, 1664 (Lauder). The Macneights were an old family in Ayrshire (Paterson, I, p. 131). In the index to Laing the name appears as: M'Knacht, Macknaicht, Makknaicht, M'Naycht. M'Nacht 1474, Maknath 1496, Maknacht 1471, M'Knach 1521, MakNauch 1526, Maknaucht 1598, M'Naucht 1498, M'Nauth 1473, McKnaught 1725, Mcknayt 1585, Makenaght 1296, Maknech 1582; MacNaght. In Ulster this name was corrupted to Macnutt, and in the United States it also became McNitt.

It is a surname, which derived from the Pictish clan MacNaghten. The clan is said to have originated from antiquity in Perthshire, near Glen Lyon, and moved to Argyll sometime at the end of the first millennia.

The McNaughts split from the parent clan at the behest of King Robert the Bruce (in the 14th Century) in order to take up lands in the South West of Scotland, which were previously owned by the Clan MacDougall.
