Dictionary of American Family Names (1956) by Elsdon Coles Smith

The house of Macneill or clan Neill is one of the most ancient of the Western Highlands. Their chiefs, the M.'s of Bara., ranked amongst the ' Principes Insularum,' who formed the council of state of the Lord of the Isles. They were divided into the two great branches, Macneill of Gigha, and Macneill of Barra, the former settled in the south of Argyleshire, and the latter in Inverness-shire, places so remote from each other that they became practically two distinct clans. The surname MacNeil comes from the MacNeil or MacNèill clan in Scottish Gaelic (Gàidhlig). Clan MacNeil is a Scottish clan situated on the island of Barra, with a castle in the bay on Castlebay (main town in Barra). The origin of clan MacNeil is debated heavily as folklore suggests that it originated from 'Niall of the 9 hostages' (Irish legend), but recent DNA tests reveal that the clan originates in Scandinavia, the MacNeil's were called 'the pirates of Scotland' as they raided nearby towns. Many of the MacNeil's now live across the world because of the Highland Clearences.
