Gaelic MacNaoimhin, 'son of the holy one, ' a diminutive of naomh in Iona the name is pronounced MacRaoi'in (Watson I, p. 519), and in Kintyre 'AcRiomhainn. The Macnivens were connected with the Macnaughtons, and had several farms and places about Lochawe. There is also a Macniven island in Loch Mor, Craignish. They were later dependents of the Campbells. Duncan M'Nicoll V'Nevin was one of Campbell of Berbreck's followers in 1623. John M'Nivaine appears in the muster-roll of the laird of Glenerquhay, 1638 (BBT., p. 398). McNewan 1684; McNeiving.
