MACCONACHIE, Macconachy, Macconachy, Macconchie, Macconchy, Macconechte, Macconechy, Macconkey, Macconnachie, Macconnechif Macconnochie Macconochie, Macconouchey, Mackonochie, Maconachie, Maconechy, Maconochie: Gaelic MacDhonnchaidh, 'son of Duncan,' which see. The Clan Donnachie (Clann Donnchaidh), better known as Clan Robertson of Atholl, are so named from 'Fat Duncan' (Donncha Reamhar) de Atholia, who lived in the time of Robert the Bruce. There was an old sept of Macoonochies in Bute, and of seventy-five persons holding lands there in 1506 six were of this name. In additiod to the Clan Donnachie or Robertsons there are three Argyllshire families that were known as MacDhonnachie: (1) MacConchie of Inverawe, an old sept of the Campbells. The Macconnachies of Meadowbank in Midlothian were descended from them. (2) MacDhonnachie Mhor or Campbell of Duntroon, (3) MacDhonnachie or Campbell of Glenfeochan. The Campbells of Kilmartin are of uncertain origin. They may have been originally Campbells or a sept of the MacDhonnachies. The Macconochie Campbells of Inverawe are descended from Duncan (Donachie) Campbell, son of Sir Neil Campbell who died before 1316. Angus M'Conchie witnessed a sasine of Cragniche to Archibald, earl of Argyll, 1493 (OPS., II, p. 97). Huchon McConzochquhy was part tenant of Kynnarde Ross, 1505 (ER., XII, p. 664). Archibald Machonzie de Leragis appears as one of an inquest in 1510, Others named on the inquest are Iain Makchonze in Stronchormaig and Gillespuig McCual McChonzie in the Kneppach, his near kindred. These three were Macconochie Campbells. Fynlaw McAndoche witnessed sasine of the lands of Balnacard, 1514 (Grandtully, I, p, 48), and Donald Dow McDouil McConche is in record, 1518 (Cawdor, p. 129). Gilbert Makconoquhy, a follower of the earl of Cassilis was respited for murder, 1526 (RSS., I, 3386). Duncan M'Condoquhy and John M'Condoquhy witnessed a Glenurquhay bond of manrent, 1528 (BBT., p. 179). Patrick M'Conquhy appears as witness at Kingarth, Bute, 1534, and Joh. M'Conquy de Culwyne was also witness in Bute, 1540 (RMS., III, 1378, 2583), and Eugene McConiquhy had sasine of lands there, 1560 (ER., XIX, p. 460). Swyne M'Conquhie and William M'Ane Makconquhye gave their bonds of manrent to George, earl of Huntlie, 1543 (SCM., IV, p. 260), and John M'Conachyw appears as witness in Glenurquhay, 1552 (BBT., p. 197). Thomas Makcongwe, a witness at the monastery of Sweetheart, 1550, and William M'Condoquhy in Drumboe was a witness, 1566 (Laing, 559,808). Matho McAndochie in Clunes, 1578 (RPC., III, p. 51), Johnne Campbell alias M'Conquhie, tutor of Inverawe, gave his bond in 1585 (BBT., p. 235) and David McConnoquhy or McConoquhy was concerned in the burning and spoiling of Moyness, 1602 (Rose, p. 292). John M Conche was retoured heir of Allan M'Conechie in Bute, in 1602 (Retours, Bute, 12). Duncan M'Ondoquhy Vane of Kildovie appears in record, 1605 (HP., III, p. 85), and Gillechrist M'Ondochie Voir in Drimcroy, 1638 (BBT., p. 401). Alexander M'Ronache (vel M'Conauiie) was retoured heir of Eugene M'Cronachie of Ambrisbeg, Bute, 1632 (Retours, Bute, 42). John McConchei, burgess of Inverness, 1652 (More Culi. Pap., p. 121). Donald M'Onochie in Kilvicewn and Thomas M'Onohie vic Avish in Icolmldll were denounced rebels in 1675 (HP., I, p. 297,298). Alexander Mc honichy, Gilbert mc khonachy, John Mc chonachy, Archibald mc kihonochy, and Duncan Mc kihonchy were enrolled among the fencible men of Argyll, 1682 (Commons, p. 58-60). Thomas McConchie was schoolmaster at Corstorphine, 1688 (RPC., 3. ser. XIII, p. 202), Colin M'Conachie Mholaich was one of the duke of Atholl's Fencible men in Glenlyon, 1706 (HMon, III, p. 215), and John McOnachy was a Seaforth tenant, 1721 (HP., II, p. 298). M'Condachie and M'Condachy 1674, M'Condochie 1588, M'Condoquhy 1532, M'Conchrie 1684, M'Conquhie 1586, Makconoch 1506, Mackchonchie 1603, McKondachy 1791, Makchonachy 1576, M'Kunuchie 1597; MacConochey, Makconchie, Makconqwe, M'Onoghuy, Vconchie. MACONOCHIE: Sir Neil Campbell of Lochow married a daughter of Sir John Cameron of Lochiel, and was father of Duncan Campbell of Inverawe in Argyleshire, temp. David II, whose son Dougal Campbell, was father of Duncan Campbell, who was called in Celtic MacDowill Vic Conachie. The surname of MacConachie was thus adopted by the Inverawe family, although the cadets still used that of Campbell.
MACONOCHIE: A cadet of Campbell, from Sir Neil Campbell of Lochow (ancestor of the Duke of Argyle) whose descendant in the fourth degree assumed the name of Mac Conochie (Mac Duncan.) This name was limited to the heads of the family, the cadets being always Campbells.
MACCONNOCHIE: The same as Mac Donnacha-the son of Duncan.
MACONOCHIE: The son of Conochie or Duncan, a name borne by the chieftain of the Campbells.
