MacQueen Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
(1) From Mac Shuibhne, 'son of Suibhne, ' Old Irish Subne, in Adamnan's Latin-Irish Suibneus. In the Gaelic genealogical ms. of 1467 it occurs in the gen. Suibne (in the Mackintosh genealogy), and in the Dean of Lismore's ms. (c. 1512-20) it is M'Soenith. An old Gaelic personal name which appears to mean 'good-going' or 'well-going'. The aspiration of the S causes the name when preceded by 'Mac' to be pronounced like MacHuin, or MacWheen, and so we have in record the forms M'Quhyne, M'Quhan (now Macwhan), M'Queyn, M'Quhen, M'Quheen, Maquhon, McQuhenne, Mauchquhen, M'Kquyne (1594). The Q is a continuation of the sound of c of Mac. The name has nothing to do with lr. MacCuinn, 'son of Conn, ' with which it has been confused through the similarity of sound. Hector Mac Souhyn was one of an inquest held at Dumbarton in 1271 which found that the daughters of the late Finlay of Campsie were the lawful heirs of the deceased Dufgall, brother of Maldouen, earl of Lennox (RMP., p. 191; Red Bk. Menteith, II, p. 218). (2) The Skye sername Macqueen is of Norse origin from the personal name Sveinn. According to the Kinrara ms. (written in 1690) the Clan Chattan Macqueens came out of Moidart about 1410. Mylmore Makquean was one of the victims of the first hership of Petty, 1502 (Rose, p. 176), and in another document relating to the same affair we have mention of Soyne (=Sween) Makrevan (ibid., p. 177). Finlay M'Quene and Gillereoch M'Oueane, followers of Donald Gorme of Sleat, had remission in 1541 for their part in laying waste Trouterness in Skye and Kenlochew in Ross (RSS., II, 3943). William Makquene, rector of Assint from 1577 to 1580 (OPS., II, p. 693) is William M'Queyne, 'subden of Ros, ' in 1581 (Cawdor, p. 183). Rory Macquein, subdicayne of Ross, witnessed a contract of friendship between Macdonald of Slate and Lauchlan Macintosh, captain of Clanchattan in 1587 (Coll., p. 99). Elyzabeth M'Quen was amerciat in 1597 in the regality court of Spynie (SCM., II, p. 135). By 1609 these Macqueens had risen to the dignity of a minor clan, and the chief signs the dan Chattan Rand of that year "for himself and taking the full burden in and upon him of John Macqueen in Little Corrybrough, Sween Macqueen in Raigbeg, and remanent his kin of that race" (Mackintosh, Clan Chattan). Donald McQuene in Conibroche and Swein McQuene of Raik (Roag) were denounced rebels. 1619 (RPC., XI, p. 565), Isobell Macquine appears in 1680 (IDR., p. 99), and Suin McSuin of Roag was one of the signers of a letter to President Forbes of Culloden, 1746 (MCP., IV, p. 179). M'Quan, M'Quam, and M'Quain in the Register of births, etc., for the parish of Kilmuir, Skye (Forbes, Place-names of Skye, p. 57) are probably variant spellings. M'Quene, M'Quein, and M'Queine, all three in Perth 1653, M'Queyn 1519, M'queyne (of Corrybrough) 1570, Mackqueane 1658. See also Macquien.
