MACCRONE: Macrone. John McCrone in Galloway had a precept of remission for inter-communing with rebels, 1535 (RSS., II, 1842). Thomas McCron witnessed a Dumfries instrument of sasine, 1566 (Edgar, p. 117), and another Thomas M'Crone in Maibie appears in 1657 (Dumfries). Jonet M'Rone and Maroun M'Rone are in record, 1618 (Trials). Margaret McCron was prisoner in Ayr, 1688 (RPC., 3. ser. XIII, p. 326), John McCrone was recorded at the Kirk, 1668 (Corsehill, p. 77), and George McCron was 'burrow officer and town drummer' of Dumfries prior to July 1719 (Edgar, p. 205). There is no evidence to support the statement that General Cronje of Boer War fame was of Scottish parentage or descent. 'Son of Cron,' an old Irish personal name meaning 'swarthy.' See Cron.
