MACSCILLING: Some time before 1326 Patrick MacScilling, evidently a person of some importance in Kintyre, and Finlach his wife, gifted the church of S. Columkill in Kintyre to the Priory of Candida Casa (Whithorn) in Galloway. The gift was confirmed by King Robert Bruce in the twentieth year of his reign, i. e. 1326 (RMS., I, App. I, 20). Macvurich mentions (Rel. Celt., II, p. 156—157) a "Gall mac Sgillin," contemporary with Dugal and Ranald, the sons of Somerled. The Annals of the Four Masters at 1154 mentions fleets of Gallgaedal (Galloway), Arran, Cintyre, Mann, and the Centair Alban, or seaboard of Alban, under the command of Macscelling, a Norwegian. The name is perhaps Old English Scilling, a personal name found in the seventh century poem Widsith (103), and also in an Old English charter of King Cynewulf (A. D. 778). Redin suggests the name may be from the stem skell- 'to resound, ring, ' in Old English scyl, 'sonorous' (Redin, p. 23).
