MacSherry Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Gaelic MacStridh. There is or was a small sept of this name in Skye, but the name is now seldom met with. In Mull a branch of the Mackinnons went by the same name, but have now become either Macdonalds or Mackinnons. The late Dr. Macbain derived the name from Norse Sigfrid or Sigerd (IV, p. 67), which Henderson thinks is phonetically doubtful, and prefers to derive the name from the feminine Sigridr (Norse influence, p. 57,351). Woulfe derives the Irish MacSherry and MacSharry from Mac Searraigh, 'son of Searrach' ('foil, flighty'). John McDonnald VcShirrie and Duncan McEane Glas VcShirie in Oskamull were put to horn for plundering the ship The Providence of Dumbarton, 1629 (RPC, 2. ser. III, p. 45). Archibald McShinie in Leattir was charged with assault and illegal warding, 1635 (ibid., 2. ser. V, p. 511). John M'Sherrie (MacScherie or M'Shirie) in Dowart and Ferquhar M'Sheri in Derryvyll were denounced rebel in 1675 (HP., I, p. 262,301, 302). Donald M'Shirrie was merchant in Inveraray, 1677 (Argyll), and Archibald M'Sherie was chapman in Gortenbuy in Mull, 1702 (Campbell, I, p. 44).

We have Knocksharry, possibly so called from a proprietor of this name, though the derivation usually given is from sharragh, a ‘foal'.
