MACUSRAIG: Henderson (p. 57) gives this as a Harris name (Scalpa, Bernera). "It was extant on the male side in 1900, but is now represented in the family I know of only on the female side." The name is without doubt from Norse Ospakr or Uspakr, a personal name meaning one who is 'a disterber of the peace, ' or one who is 'violent in his conduct (Fritzrier, Ordbog over det gamle norske Sprog). The Norse Konunga Sogur records under the year 1209-1210 that "Uspak the Hebridean went on piracy into the Hebrides." Dugal, the son of Somerled, had a son named Ospac, and slightly disguised as Aspuig the name occers in the Macleod pedigree in the genealogical ms. of 1467 (Coll., p. 361). An individual of this name gave name to Buaile Mhic Uspaig in Skye (Forbes, p. 94). Macasbaig is a side form.
