Variant spellings of this name recorded by Matterson are MacVeity, MacVity, MacVeety and Mavity, but the total number of people in Ireland bearing these names is small. Formerly it was prominent in Co. Longford where John MacVitty was high sheriff in 1773. If Woulfe is correct in giving the Gaelic form of the name as Mac an Bhiadhtaigh it is etymologically akin to Betagh and Beatty - (see More Irish Families pp. 30, 31).
