From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

MACVURICH: Gaelic M'Mhuirich, Middle Gaelic. M'Mhuireadhaigh. See under Murdoch. The bardic family of M'Vurich claimed descent from the famous Irish poet Muireach Albannach of first half of thirteenth century. Some of them now call themselves Macphersons by confusion with the Badenoch Clann Mhuirich. Gillecolaim mac Muredig is one of the witnesses to a grant to the Abbey of Deer, 1132 (Bk. Deer, III, 10). Lacclann M'Murghaich, 'archipoeta, ' witnessed a charter granted in 1485 to the abbot of Iona by the lord of the Isles (Bardachd Gaidhlig, p. 300), and Donald McMurich and John McMurich were witnesses at Kirnan, 1573 (Poltalloch Writs, p. 144). Malcolme McVoriche in Glenlyoun was fined for reset of Clan Gregor, 1613 (RPC., XIV, p. 633), Donald Mc wirrich was tenant of Ballichoan in Seill, 1669 (HP., IV, p. 224) and Patrick M'Mhourich was enrolled in the Duke of Atholl's fencible men in Glenlyon, 1706 (HMon., III, p. 215). Jonet M'Vorich is in Cablea, parish of Little Dunkeld, 1702, and Marjorie M'Vourich in Botwamiebeg, 1728 (Dunkeld). In Arran M'Mhuirich is spelled MacFuirigh or AcFuirigh, and Englished Currie. At Southend of Arran it is spelled Mac uirigh. Angus McWerie, Lachlane McWurie, and John McWurie were tenants in Islay, 1686 (Bk. Islay, p. 507,509). McVoerich 1682; McVarraich, McVirrich, McVurriche, Makvirriche, McWirriche. In Rel. Celt, spelled McMuirigh, McMuiredhaigh, McMuiredhuigh (II, p. 224,286, 297). See also Macvarish and Macvoreis.
