MACWALRICK: In Gaelic MacUalraig and MacUaraig, and sometimes MacCuaraig. The name is said to be derived from one Ulrick or Walrick Kennedy, a scion of the Kennedys of Dunure, Ayrshire, who fled to Lochaber early in the sixteenth century and founded the sept of M'Walrick of Leaneachan. In Galloway and in Carrick the old Gaelic personal name Ualgarg or Ualgharg, 'high temper, ' was confused with Teutonic Ulrick, now Ulrich (from Old High German Vadalrich. Latinized Oudalricus, explained by a Latin gloss as "paterna hereditate dives," patrimonially rich, Foerstemann, Altdeutsches Namenbuch, I, col. 981). Sir Duncan McOlrig or Makolrik possessed the chaplainry of St. Ninians, in the parish of Urquhart, before 1556 (Grant, III, p. 121). An individual of this name has given rise to Lochan Mhic Cuaraig in Lome.
