In the Buccleuch mss. the name occers as Makquhynze and M'Quhynze (1526), and Makkynnay (1593). Thomas M'Quhinze was chap. In Ayr in 1502 (Ayr, p. 101), and Donald Makquhinze, a follower of the earl of Cassilis, was respited for murder in 1526 (RSS., I, 3386). William McQuhinny in parish of Cersfern was charged with being a disorderly person, 1684 (RPC., 3. ser. IX, p. 575). Alexander M'Whinnie in Cairnfield in 1739 (Wigtown).
