Madrid Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

One who came from Madrid (town; small wood), the capital of Spain.

The Arabic "mad-sherit" is the root of this word. It signifies "place of fresh, invigorating breezes."

Surname from province or city in Spain, the capital city of nation. Meaning from that city or province, name found principally in Madrid but also common in Toledo and Salamanca. Occasionally used as patronymic, Madrid often used in combination with toponyms or estate names. Of unknown meaning.

Menéndez Pidal theorizes that "madrid" comes from "mageterito" whose first element "mago-mageto" means great or large and the second is the Celtic "ritu-" meaning bridge. The meaning is thus large bridge. Gómez Moreno, on the other hand, traces it to mean place of many huts.

A Castilian name. One branch in Andalusia.
