Magtuto Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

The Magtoto surname is prevalent in the province of Pampanga in The Philippines. The surname finds its roots in the ancient Filipino/Tagalog language and derives its meaning from the word matuto, which means 'learned one' or 'to seek learning'. An interesting fact about Pampanga is it was one of the eight provinces which resisted colonialism from the Spaniards in the 1600s; and was one of the retaliating forces against their regime in the Philippines. It can be said that the surname is one of the few remaining Tagalog or 'truly Filipino' surnames that have not been westernised or influenced by external influences, beyond the Romanization of the name itself.
