In isiXhosa there is a slight variation, hachi becomes hashe and similar variations occur for other languages from countries such as Zambia and Malawi. The ma- prefix is plural, therefore hachi is 'horse' and mahachi is 'horses'. The surname originates from ownership, settlers came with horses to Africa and some Africans who got to own horses adopted the nickname Mahachi over time this evolved into a surname. The Africans who own horses were very rich and rich people would marry many wives in the past thus the name spread a lot and now there are thousands of people with the surname in Zimbabwe.
