Mail Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
MAEL-, Mail-, (later Maol-): The use of this word signifying "cropped," "shaveling," "slave," goes back to pagan times, and it is found in the ogham inscriptions, though rarely. Among the early Gaels close cropped hair was a mark of servile position:- the nobles of the tribe always wore their hair long.
Though later translated as 'servant, ' 'devotee, ' "the notion of servitude is for the most part at least, in abeyance. What is indicated is some relation more or less vague to us, between the generic term maol and the specific term following in the genitive case." After the conversion of the Gaels to Christianity the names of the leading Gaelic saints were used as personal names with the addition of mael-. Examples of this ere Mael-Coluim, Mael-Pairaic, Mael-Micheil, etc. The addition of Mael implied that the person sonamed was under the saint's charge, or born on his day. At a later date the Mael- form gave place to Gille-, 'lad, ' 'youth, ' 'servant and still later in most cases we have the simple Callum, Patrick, Michael. Mael in Irish Gaelic names is rarely found seperate, and in such a case would most likely be a hypocoristic shortening of one of the many names beginning with Mael-. The many names with Maael (Maoi) and Gille prefixed are of great value as preserving historical evidence "as to the religious cult and ways of thinking, and also in certain cases of the utmost importance as regards the language in use at a particular period in a particular district."
"Once the names became established they might be applied without reference to the original circumstances that gave rise to them." in Breton maol (moel, 1380), 'bald, ' enters into the composition of innumerable Breton names, as Kermaol, etc. When maol and gille are aspirated the resultant pronunciation is apt to become confused to non-Gaelic ears, and the same result occurs when these words are in the genitive: (Mh)aoile, (Gh)ille.Stolen from Fore bears
