An old Strathearn surname still found in the shires of Stirling, Perth, and Fife. From the lands of Mailer in the parish of Forteviot, Perthshire. Johan de Malere, the king's tenant in the county of Perth, rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, 11, p. 202), and Symon de Mailer witnessed confirmation of a charter by Malise, earl of Strathern in 1360 (Scon, p. 136). Robert Meyler is recorded in Perth in 1557. "John Malar son and air of vmquhill Lyonas Maler, burgess of Ochtirardour" is in record in 1615 (Reid, Auchterarder). Mollar, near Touch, Stirlingshire, was formerly spelled Malar, but the Perthshire place seems the more likely source of the surname. The English surname Mailer is of quite different origin.
