From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Perhaps a nickname, but explained without proof or much probability as 'Little wit' or to be more exact, 'Bad wit' (Baring-Gould, p. 376). The name occurs frequently in Northumberland in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries as Maltalent (1170) and Mautalent (1230) (Bain, I, 123, 1114). The first of the name in Scotland was Thomas de Matulant who appears as witness to a charter by John de Landeles of Hownan in 1227 (Melros, I, 247). Gillebertus de Maltalent was a charter witness, c. 1215 (Panmure, II. 124). W Mautalent was one of a number appointed to settle a dispute between the churches of Glasgow and Kelso in 1221 (REG., 116), and William Matalent, perhaps the same person, witnessed a grant by Hugh de Bygris, 1228 (Kelso, 186). Between 1220 and 1240 William Ma-talent or Mautalent appears as witness in other Kelso charters in which he and others are designed as 'servientes abbatis' (ibid., 153,194, 242). Sir Richard de Mauteland obtained the lands of Thirlastane by marriage with Avicia, daughter and heiress of Thomas de Thirlestane, in the reig of Alexander II. William de Mautlent confirmed to Dryburgh various grants by his rather, d. 1315 (Dryburgh). William Maltalent, witness, 1357 (Neubotle, p. 309). Robert Matilland or Matillande, dominus de Schewes, present at perambulation of lands of Tarwas and Wldny, 1417 (RAA., II, 53), is probably Robert Maitland, one of the hostages for the ransom of James I in 1424. Maitlands have distinguished themselves as lawyers and statesmen, and also in the naval and military services of Britain. (Scottish, English) Dweller at, or on, the meadow or pasture land.
The Earl of Lauderdale's family were seated in the southern counties of Scotland as early at least as the XIII. century. Their chief abode was Thirlstane in Berwickshire, but the name would appear to have been derived from a place in the parish of Inveresk, co. Edinburgh, called Magdalen Pans, by corruption Maitland Pans, from a chapel dedicated to St. Mary Magdalen, which formerly stood there. This property continued in the family until 1710.
Meadow land. The family are descended from Thomas de Matulant, temp. William the Lion.
Local. A tract of flat, meadow land.
Or Maltalent. Robert Maltalent, Normandy, 1198 (Magni Rotuli Scaccarii Normanniae). Maltalent was near Nantes. Ralph Maltalent, c. 1135, witnessed a charter in York (Mon. ii. 192), as did Gilbert Mantalent, t. Henry II. (i. 733). The family was seated in York in 1165, when Richard Maltalent held half a knight’s fee from Vescy of Alnwick, of which he had been enfeoffed by Eustace Fitz-John (Liber Niger), and also half a fee from Percy. He witnessed a charter of Eustace F. John (Mon. ii. 592) to the priory of Alnwick. Richard M. paid a fine to the Crown in Northumberland, 1231 (Hodgson, iii., iii. 163). Thomas de Matulant, a younger brother, settled in Scotland, t. William the Lion (Chart. Mailros.), and d. 1228. His son, William de Matulent, witnessed charters of Alexander II. and d. c. 1250. From him descended the Dukes and Earls of Lauderdale.
