There are different versions of the origin of this surname. According to one of them, the surname Makarov could be formed from the name Makarii, more precisely, from it's shortened form - Makar. Translated from the Greek language, makarios, meaning 'happy', 'blessed'. Such a name could be given to a Christian ancestor, born at one of the days in memory of St. Macarius, who was the Metropolitan of Corinth. Also in the Ryazan region of Russia the savvy and dexterous people were called Makar. But in the Siberian dialect of the Russian language it meant simple-minded and gullible. According to another version, the surname may go back to the name of the village Makarovo, named in honour of it's founder or owner. Makarovs was Russian noble families. Vasily Makarov was an ancestor of one of them. He was Posadsky of Vologda. He lived at the end of 17th century. One of his sons, Alexei, was the cabinet secretary of Russian Emperor Peter the Great. Another son, Kuzma, was a clerk, and under Anna Ioannovna. he was Ober-Kriegs-Commissar.
