Naoum was originally makdesi naoum (مقدسي نعوم), which translates to 'Jerusalemite Naoum' or 'Naoum of Jerusalem'. It was changed three generations ago (around 60 years).
Family tradition says they originated in Mardin, Turkey, but during the the Armenian Genocide in 1915, the family was forced to flee to Al Kameshli, Syria. Then in the 1980s they moved to Aleppo, Syria.
