Recherus Mecmaccharil witnessed confirmation by Dunekan, earl of Karic of a charter by Roger de Scallebroc of lands in Carrik in the reign of William the Lion (Melros, p. 26), and as Radulfus Makerel witnessed a charter by Richard de Moreville of lands in Roxburgh to the Abbey of Melrose in the same reign (ibid., p. 95). MACKERRELL: Ancient in Ayrshire, and presumed to be of Norman origin. The variations are Kirriel, Kirel, and Kirrel; and the surname also exists in Sweden. B. L.G. It seems to be the same as Caryll in England, the MAC having been applique.
