MAKERSTON: From the lands of Makerstoun near Kelso, Roxburghshire. Master Adam de Malcarristoun, a cleric, was a prominent personage in the first half of the thirteenth century He was witness to the gift of the church of Wemys in Fife to the Hospital of Soltre and to a gift of lands in Langton to the same house before 1240 (Soltre, p. 13, 14; see also p. 19). As Adam de Malkaruiston he witnessed the grant of Dolbethoc to Monymusk, c. 1233-35 (RPSA., p. 369). In 1245 he is witness to a composition (ibid., p. 330), and in other records, c. 1250, he appears as clericus domini episcopi (ibid., p. 169,281). In 1259 he was official of Gamelin, bishop of St. Andrews, and later appears as rector of Collessie, and in 1263 as rector of Syreys (Ceres) (Pap. Lett., I, p. 391). John de Malkarestone of the county of Roxburghe rendered homage in 1296. The seal attached to his homage bears a falcon in a gloved left hand and arm, and S' Ihoannis de Malkerst (Bain, II, p, 199,532). William de Mulkarriston received payment of an annuity in 1328 (ER., I, p. 114).
