The name originates from the colonial era form of money (coins) which were called crowns. To the indigenous Zambian and Zimbabwean people who found it hard to pronounce the name of these coins, the plural, with reference to many of these coins, was "makoloni" because it sounded similar and close to the name of the lower denomination of the pound currency we were using as Zambia during the time the British Colonised us and merged Northern Rhodesia, now Zambia, with southern Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe and Nyasaland, now Malawi into a federation hence the reason why this name is only common in modern day Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi and nowhere else.
