MALAECHIN: Malaechin is one of the witnesses to the gift by Colban, mormaer of Buchan and Eva, his wife, to the Abbey of Deer (Bk. Deer, VI 32). The full form of the name is Mael (Fh)echin 'servant of Fechin' of the monastery of Fore (Fobhar) in Westmeath, who died c. 665. In a merginal note to the Feilire in the Leabhar Breac (fol. 80) at January 20 is the entry:"This now is how he was called Fechin: he happened to be picking a bone in his mother's presence, when a child, and his mother said (to him) this is my little Fiachan (or little raven)." The name is also Latinized Corvulus. diminutive of corvus. Malechi which also occurs in the Book of Deer (v) is probably intended for the fuller Malaechin. The saint may have given name to Pitmachie in the parish of Oyne, Aberdeenshire, in 1362 Pethmalachy.
