Malanin Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

This name is a Russian surname. There is no definite origin for this name but it is hypothesised that it originates from Church Slavonic. It is a baptismal name, originating from the masculine name, Malan, which is a diminutive for Malachi (which means 'my messenger'). Other possible derivatives include malachite, Malafei, Malofey, Malashko, Malan and Malasha.

The other hypothesis is that this name comes from the female baptismal name, Malan, which is a diminutive for Melania (from the Greek and Anglicised is Melanie), meaning 'dark'. This is unlikely though as it was not tradition to name a family after a female rather than male. This could happen though if the patriarch died and there was left a matriarch.

Because of the way Russian names are formed, the suffix -in was most probably affixed to malan.

It is undoubtedly Russian but there is a possibility that it was adopted by native Finnic Russians as well from around Ivanova.
