MALGIRG: 'devotee of (S. ) Cyricus. ' See Girig. Malgirc mac Tralin witnessed the grant by Gartnait and the daughter of Gillemicel to the Abbey of Deer (Bk. Deer, IV, 2). Malgirhe the canon, probably of Dunblane, witnessed the grant by Symon, bishop of Dunblane, of the church of S. John to Inchaffray c. 1190 (Inchaffray, p. 1; see also p. 263). He is most probably the Malgirk de Mothel (Muthill) who witnessed charters by Earl Gilbert of Strathearn, c. 1198-1200 (ibid., p. 3, 13), and probably the Malkirg, prior of the Culdees of Mothle, who appears as charter witness, c. 1214 (CMN., p. 12). His name is wrongly spelled Malgegill in the Registrum de Cambuskenneth (p. 217). A Maelgiriec is mentioned in the Annals of Ulster under 931, and Gyric, a 'mass, priest' (maessepreost) in England, was of sufficient prominence to have his death recorded in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle under 963.
