MALISE: Gaelic Maol Iosa, Early Irish Maelisu, 'shaveling' or 'tonsured servant of Jesus. ' This was a favorite name with the old earls of Strathearn, being borne by no less than four of them in succession. Malis or Malisius, parson of Dunblane, is in record c. 1190 and c. 1210 (Cambus., 122), and Malisius, presbyter and hermit, was the first prior of 'Inche Affren, ' i. e. Inchaffray, c. 1200 Inchaffray, p. 7; Cambus., p. 313). Another Malisius appears as parson of Cref, c. 1235 (LSC., 66b). Malise, a vassal of the earl of Lennox, gave his name to the lands of Finnick-Malice (Strathendrick, p. 211). Malise, a tanist of the Macleans, is said to have had this name given him as an ainm rathaid or 'road name. ' As a surname it is still with us as Melus, q. v., and its allied forms.
