I first met with this name in Cheshire, where Richard Mailard is mentioned in William de Meschines’ grant to Chester Abbey. It is unmistakeably Norman. Henri Mallard was one of the one hundred and nineteen “gentilshommes de Normandie” who, in 1423, defended Mont St.Michel against the English. Walter Maillard held of the King by serjeanty at Bradwell; William Mailard one knight’s fee at Sutton in Nottinghamshire. —Testa de Nevill.
