MALOTHENY: Probably 'the shaveling of Eithne' (mother of S. Columba). Maloden marescal witnessed grant of the lands of Perdeyc (Partick) to the church of S. Kentegern, c. 1136 (REG., p. 9), and as Malothen le mareschald witnessed a confirmation by Earl Henry, c. 1144 (RPSA., p. 193). In the reign of Alexander I another Malothen appears as the first known uice-comes of Scone, and the old family of de Scone were probably descendants of the hereditary sheriff (Robertson, Scotland under her early kings, II, p. 491). Duncan, son of Michael son of Malotheny, granted the lands of Kernes to the church of St. Andrews in the time of Malcolm, seventh earl of Fife (RPSA., p. 309). Malotheny macmadethy was witness to a document relating to the church of Inuerhouen in Banffshire, c. 1210 (REM., p. 15). Mallethny and Mallehny were native men (serfs) of the Abbey of Dunfermline in the thirteenth century (RD., p. 221). The later form with Gille- is also found. Gille ethueny who was one of the jurors on the boundaries of Westere fedale, 1246 (LAC., p. 26) may be the Gyllehtheny, father of Gillecrist Rothe, who with his issue, born or to be born, were quitclaimed to the abbot and convent of Inchaffray, 1278 (Inchaffray, p. 101).
