Gaelic Maelpetair, 'shaveling of (S. ) Peter. ' Malpeder, earl of Merns treacherously killed King Duncan II at Monacheden, now Mondynes, on 12th November 1094 (CPS., p. 175; ES., II, p. 90-91). Malpetir mac Domnall witnessed the gift by Gartnait and Ete to the Abbey of Deer, 1132 (Bk. Deer, III, 11). The name early gave way to the Gille-form, as shown by the name of the Gillipeter who witnessed the gift by Colban, mormaer of Mar, and Eva his wife to the same abbey (ibid., VI). See Macphater.
