From the occupation of 'maltman, ' a maltster. Alexander Maltman was admitted burgess of Aberdeen in 1527 (NSCM., I, p. 50). The surname is recorded in Rotary in 1640 and 1642 as Maltman and Matman (the same individual) (Strathbogie, p. 24, 29). Margaret Maltman is recorded in Coldinghame in 1671 (Lauder).
