MALVOISINE: William Malevoisine, a Frenchman, was made chancellor of Scotland 8 September 1199, elected bishop of Glasgow in following month, and bishop of St. Andrews on 20 September 1202 (Dowden, p. 300). His name appears in record as Malevicinus and the current form was Mauvaysin. In the thirteenth century, it is spelled Maleveisin, and Wyntoun spells it Mallvycyne. The name means 'bad neighboer. ' As William Mauueisyn, clericus regis, he witnessed a charter by Richard de Friuill to Arnbroath Abbey, c. 1178-80 (RAA., I, 90).
