During the reign of the Mughal Empire in India at the advent of 1530's, there was a select group of religious Islamic Shariah scholars in court of Emperor Babur, who had the task of managing money. These individuals were the accountants/ finance experts that we now have in our present day and age. They were mostly in charge of handling the 'amdani' (Urdu dialect for money/income). They were proficient in their work and soon became a more integral part of the king's courts. Most of them thus took up last names 'Mamdani' which was derived from the prefix 'Mai' (Urdu dialect for me) and 'amdani' (money) and meant 'individual who advices on money matters'.
The Mamdani's were proficient in math and finance and soon branched out into professions such as buying and selling of precious gems, artificial jewellery and clothing. They were the pioneers in venture capitalism during the Mughal raj and sponsored/ financed many an expedition to explore new lands and for trading spices/ clothes/gemstones. Some historians also in the later part of the 17th century have associated the Mamdani surname to Goldsmith as the Mamdani's had also learned the fine art of Gemology. The Mamdani's were therefore more prevalent in the courts of Humayun, Akbar, Jahangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb.
