(English) Vassal, Servant; Hero [Old English mann, man, vassal, hero] This name is found in the Liter Vitae (9th cent. ff.), and in early times was doubtless often used as an heroic appellation: later the notion of vassalage or service was more fully developed.
Previously to paying the wergild, the king’s ‘mund’ (a fine to the king for breach of his protection) was to be levied; after which, within twenty-one days, the ‘healsfang’ (apprehensio colli, collistrigium) was to be discharged; and after that, with in a twenty-one days, the ‘manbót,’ or indemnity to the lord of the slain for the loss of his man.—Lappenberg-Thorpe, Anglo-SaxonKings, ii. 413.
Like master, like man.—Old Proverb.
The vassal or tenant, kneeling, ungirt, uncovered, and holding up his hands between those of his lord, professed that he did become his man from that day forth, of life, limb, and earthly honour.— Blackstone; Webster.
Henry le Man.—Hundred Rolls (Celtic) belonging to (the Isle of) Man [? Cymric mân, place, or district]
(German, English) The vassal or servant; one who came from the Isle of Man, a Manxman.
This is a proper name of vast antiquity-the Mannus of the Teutonic mythology. Tacitus says of the Germans (cap. ii.): They celebrate in their ancient hymns, Tuisco, the earth-born, and his son Mannus, the originators and founders of their race: "Celebrant carminibus antiquis Tuistonem, terra editum, et filium Mannum, originem gentis conditoresque." Hence, doubtless, our word man, homo. Once adopted as a personal name, it would naturally become a surname. In some cases, however, the name is derived from Le Man, a native of the province of Maine, analogous to Le Breton, Le Norman, &c. Possibly also from the island in the Irish sea. See Man.
A servant, a vassal. The family are descended from Sir Walter Maign, temp. David Bruce.
(German.) Gentleman or master, the same as Herr. Man, in the Welsh, signifies freckled or spotted; also, a spot, a place.
Main, or Mann (E., S., and I.), Man (Dutch/Flemish), Mann (German), Man, Servant, Vassal; also, in the Celtic, Hero; for, in Erse, “maon” signifies a hero. (variant: McManus.) The name may also he derived from Maine (the province), Man (the island), manas or mains (Scotch), farm or fields, maen (Welsh), stone, Man (Romance), Norman; or from Mani, the Moon, as, in the ancient Teutonic languages, the moon, called Mani, is of the masculine gender, and the sun feminine; and it was formerly customary in some parts of Germany to show them proper respect by calling them Mr. Moon and Mrs. Sun.
According to Tacitus, the Germans had a tradition that they were descended from Mann (Mannus), son of Tuisco, son of Odin.
When “man” occurs as a termination, it appears to have various meanings; as, firstly, in the names Adelmann (q. v.), Bannerman, Spearman, Prettyman, which require no explanation. Secondly, to signify dealer, maker, or worker; as, Appel- man (q. v.), Cheeseman, Kammann (q. v.), Saltman, Woolman. Thirdly, dweller in or by; as, Hulsemann (q. v.), Parkman, Templeman. And, fourthly, serf or vassal; as, Heiligenmann (q. v.), Konigsmann (q. v.).
Sir Walter Maign, Knight, lived temp. King David Bruce (1331-1370), from whom he got a charter: “domino Waltero Maign, Militi, terrarum de Auchluchry in Vice Comi- tatu de Aberdeen.” His descendants, some of whom settled in other counties, wrote the name Mayne, Main, and Mann.
Man: in Latin homo, occurs in almost every page of the Domesday Survey, and included every kind of feudatory tenant. One of his most important privileges was that his person and case could be tried only in the court of his lord, to whom he was bound by submission. Hence the word homage. A Newman was a man who came into the jurisdiction of the lord from some other manor. Also described as a Newcomen. The surname of Man would be puzzling if we did not know its origin as a term designating a particular class.
Mann was an old and numerous Widecombe name in the 16th and 17th centuries, and it still has its principal home in the county in that neighbourhood (Dy.).
The Manns have found a home in Norfolk, Suffolk, and Cambridgeshire for at least six centuries, Man being the early form of the name (H. R.). There was a family of Mann in Norwich at the beginning of last century, and the name is still in the city.
Mann, though well represented in this county, has its ancient and present home in the eastern counties.
