According to my father (1908 - 1985), the original family name was, 'Galle Manage'. The first part usually refer to the town of family origin and the second part is the family name. Last 2 letters of the family name 'ge' means house in Sinhala. His grand-father was not very popular in the town, and people used to refer to him as 'Mannakkara', meaning 'proud man', a bit sarcastic. It seems he did not know the meaning and being a long name, adapted as the family name 'Mannakkarage'. With the trend in Sri-Lanka the 'ge' part and the 'town' was dropped and most people use only the family name 'Mannakkara'.
