From Gaelic manntach, 'stammering, ' Irish 'toothless, ' 'stammering. ' Gilcrist Mantauch filius Gilgrewer, a native man of the Abbey of Dunfermline, is recorded in the thirteenth century (RD., p. 221). Thomas Mantach was one of an inquest on the lands of Ledyntoschach and Rotmase, 1398, and was also one of an inquest on the lands of Clak in 1418 (REA. I, p. 201,216). A protection was granted John Mantache in Ballindallach, 1629 (RPC., 2. ser. III, p. 14). Iain Lorn, the Gaelic bard, was sometimes known as Iain Manntach because he had an impediment in his speech. Andrew Mantach in Urquhart, 1792 (Moray). A tribe of Keppoch Macdonalds in early sixteenth century were known as Sliochd Gittemhantich, or the race of the stutterer (Gregory, p. 109n.)
