From Manuel in the parish of Muiravonside, Stirlingshire. The priory of Manuel or Emmanuel here was founded by Malcolm IV for ladies of rank. John Manuel of Stirlingshire rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 208), and Alexander of Manuel was a monk of Holyrood in 1299 (ibid., II, 1052). David de Manuel is mentioned in a lease of land in Angus in 1329 (RAA., II, p. 1; RMS., I, App. I, 29). William Manuel or de Manuel was abbot of Neubotle from 1413 to 1419 (Neubotle, p. xxv), John Manvell was serjeant of the barony of Inverleith in 1610 (Laing, 1585), another John Manuell is recorded in Huttoune in 1653, and William Manual was merchant in Lilliesleaf, 1781 (Heirs, 407). Sir Michael de Mauwel, monk of Aberbrothok, 1361 (Panmure II, 177) may be meant for Manwel (Manuel).
