His descendants were the famous Earls of Essex, extinct in the 13th cent. From a younger branch probably sprang the famous traveller, Sir John M., in the 14th cent. In charters "de Magna Villa" and "de Mandaville." Magneville is near Valognes, in Normandy; and there are two places called Mandeville, one near Louviers, and another in the arrondissement of Bayeux.' Manvell is a manifest variant.
